Planning Activities (Schedule interviews/develop questions)

My interview will take place on 12/14, with someone who works on island management at my father's boss's island. The questions I will be asking are as follows:

1. What made you interested in a job for island management?

2. How does everything manage to work on this island that would normally only work if you were in the city/community?

3. In regards to staff, what type of skills do you look for in hiring?

4. What is the process like in order to build a new structure on the island?

5. What would you say are the best and worst aspects of having a job on an island?

Planning Activities (Schedule photo shoots)

In order to get the photographs I need for my magazine, I will be going with my father to his boss's island on Thursday, December 14. My father goes every Thursday and is there pretty much a whole school day so I will have to miss a day of school to go with him. Once I am there, I will be taking photographs around the island that will work with my magazine and article.

If I need to get more photographs at Lido Key, Siesta Key, Nokomis, Egmont Key, or Desoto Park, I will have to go this weekend on 12/16 or sometime during the last week of school before winter break. However, I believe I will get enough photographs around the different locations of the island that I will be going to on Thursday.

Planning Activities (Scout locations for photo shoots)

The magazine I will be creating will be about island life and will have an overall tropical aspect to it. In order to reach the goal I have for this magazine, I will need to take photographs on an island. My family owns a boat, so I am able to reach more places that may help with my magazine photographs. I have thought about going to Egmont Key, Fort De Soto Park, and a private island owned by my father's boss.

If I am unable to go to any of these locations because of weather, I may have to change my magazine concept to something regarding the beach instead. If this occurs I would go to Lido Key Beach, Siesta Key Beach, or even Nokomis Beach.

Magazine Project Research (Lonely Planet)

The final magazine for my background research is the Lonely Planet magazine. Like all the other magazines, the front cover has a background photo with multiple text overlying it. The title of the magazine is in bold, white, lowercase letters. The rest of the text is also in white while some has a surrounding red background. The photo is of Lake Pehoé in Chile's Torres del Paine National Park. The view of the lake also includes a mountain in the background. The subtitle of the magazine is Best in Travel: 50 Inspiring Places to see in 2018.

This magazine begins with many short articles within a certain section. These sections are called Postcards, Globetrotter, Easy Trips, and best in Travel 2018. On pg. 54, the first long article begins titled Land of Ice and Fire. This page ends on pg. 65 and does not contain any ads within, whereas the smaller articles before did. On pages 66-73, and 74-83. There are two more long articles without any ads. On page 84, there is a single paged ad followed by one more long article. The ads before page 54 are mostly single paged and involve something used during travel or places to visit while traveling. The Postcards section includes images of places related to island life. In Globetrotters, the articles are about travel trends and discoveries. The next section is self explanatory and is about exactly what the section is titled, Easy Trips, and best in Travel 2018. Land of Ice and Fire is about the Japanese Alps and supplies the reader with information relating to life there and traditions. A Mexican Feast, the next long article contains many different Mexican recipes that the reader can try. Following is an article titled, Once Upon a Time in the West, and is about Iceland's wild western life. The final longer article is titled The Great Escape: Chile and contains four smaller articles within, all about Chile.

Photographs throughout this magazine are simply beautiful. On the cover, as stated before, is a photo of Lake Pehoé and contains magnificent mountains in the background. On the table of contents pages, there are four photos. On the first page of the contents section, there is a photo of Shirakawa-gō, Japan, covering the entirety of the page. On the last contents page, the final three pictures are ones that hint at the content inside some of the articles. In the articles themselves, there are plenty of photos all relating to the information given to the reader. Each picture is special and helps the reader understand the content even more.

I was unable to find the circulation number for this magazine as well. I have emailed the consumer marketing circulation specialists at: ron@npsl.com. If I get a response, I will update this post with the circulation number. This magazine has not won any awards so far and does not seem to have been nominated for any either.

Magazine Project Research (Coastal Living)

The magazine Coastal Living is more about islands rather than visiting different countries. The front cover has a background photo of someone on an island. There are two palm trees on either side with a light blue VW bus in the center. The bus has gifts inside, on top, and outside of it along with a surf board sticking out of the back. There is a woman in a bathing suit and cover up playing a ukulele in front of the bus as well. All of these factors in the photograph help with colors and assist in a bright, enjoyable front cover. The main title of the magazine is in all caps with a yellow color which helps make it stand out against the palm tree leaves and blue sky. The subtitle is in bold and reads, "Hawaii for the Holidays," in black and, "(And How to Live Aloha Year-Round)," in pink. There is one more caption at the bottom of the front cover that gives you a glimpse of the material inside. This text is in bold with yellow, white, and pink color.

The articles begin with smaller, less significant information. Pages 13-20 are all titled currents and include information relating to current items people have and enjoy in their lives. These items are mostly all everyday items and some being small machines or games just for enjoyment. Before you get to page 13 there are some small ads. Then, after page 20 are a couple more ads before you get to the section titled Havens. This section of small articles includes ways to design your beach house, if you are so lucky to have one. This information goes from page 23-33 and contains a few ads within these pages. The ads in this section all relate to house design. The next section begins on page 35 and ends at page 47 and is titled Navigator, including information about where to visit on the coast. There are only a couple of advertisements at the end of this collection and one is about the capitol one card and the other is about hotels. The longer articles begin on page 50 and go to 79. There are three within these pages and no advertisements. Two out of the three have many pictures around the text to show what the information is referring to. The last article is about food recipes, it has large background images with recipes on top. "The Home of Hula" is the first articles title, as it suggests, it is about hula in Hawaii. Then the next one is about home living and is titled "Surfer's Paradise". The last section of small articles is titled Bounty and is about food. Their are only two ads in this section, one is for furniture and the other is for magazine media.

The photo on the cover is very eye-catching with its color combinations and relaxing vibe. I have described the cover in more detail in the first paragraph. On the table of contents page, there is one aerial photograph of people at the beach and in the water. It has many bright colors in it including pink, yellow, green, and blue. This photo takes up about half of the page with page numbers of sections surrounding it. The articles in the Currents section include images of items that people currently enjoy using. In the Havens section, images are used relating to home improvement. When you move to the Navigator section, there are photos of locations to visit and foods to enjoy there. These photos range in sizes and range in location in the articles. In "the Home of Hula", photographs are included of men and women participating in the hula. As you continue flipping through, the next article "Surfer's Paradise" includes more pictures of home ideas and improvements. The last big article is titled "Taste of Hawaii" and it has a main background photo on each of its pages along with a couple of smaller images relating to specific recipes or the creators of the recipes. Finally, the last section is titled Bounty and has a couple articles with more recipes and food information. These pictures are also of food and show how delicious the foods are.

The distribution number was unable to be found online. I did find on the Times Inc. website the email to Drew Wintemberg, EVP Sales and Logistics: drew_wintemberg@timeinc.com. I have contacted him and I'm waiting to see if he will respond or lead me in the right direction to find the distribution number. This magazine has not won any awards or been nominated either.

Magazine Project Research (The World's Most Amazing Places)

During magazine research, I came across The World's Most Amazing Places magazine. The front cover is the best I've seen out of the five magazines I chose for this research. It has a beautiful background photo of mountains on the water. These mountains are a beautiful red/orange color with white sunny tops and a forest bottom. The water is a beautiful bright blue/green color. The combination of all of these colors against the blue sky creates a picture of a place that doesn't even seem to be real. On the front page, there are nice bold fonts used. The main title of the magazine is in all caps, white, bold font. The rest of the front page text is all white except for the number 112 which is in yellow to help stand out more. The rest of the caption involving 112 says, "112 Destinations to See in Your Lifetime." Then under this, it lists a few topics that are included inside the magazine.

As the title of the magazine suggests, the articles within are all about places around the world. There are seven different sections in this magazine that have small articles related to the section they fall in. Most of the articles are laid out with a background photo covering two pages, then the actual information is on the side of each page. Some however have a couple photos instead of one in the background along with more article information. There is an article on every single page of this magazine; most of them are one page or a couple pages. Advertising in this magazine is non-existent. This suggests that the magazine does so well that it has no need to use advertisements.

Photography in this magazine and the photos within are absolutely magnificent. You can tell the photographers really paid attention to lightning and color combinations by how much the pictures pop and draw the readers in. They relate to the articles in each section and you wouldn't be able to get over the beauty in each and every one. Like I said earlier, the photo on the front cover has the  best color combination with the mountains and the water. On the table of contents section there is a photograph of an island. However, instead of just a boring picture of an island, it includes some of the coral life underwater with the island trees in the background. Along with the background photo, there are smaller photos that give you a glimpse into what each section of the magazine brings. Each article has its own photos relating to the information given. The photos help and show you what each place is like and how they could very well be the most amazing places in the world.

The distribution number for this magazine was sadly not possible to find. I did find out that it was "presented" by Centennial Outdoors, however, I was not able to find any information regarding the magazine online. In the credits section in the back of the magazine, it lists the publishers and the many people that took part in the production of the magazine. In this, there were no emails or phone numbers so I was unable to reach out to anybody involved to try to find the distribution number. Also, this magazine has not one any awards or received any nominations.

Magazine Project Research (Travel + Leisure)

Travel and Leisure magazine is a beautiful travel magazine with many pages of information. The specific issue I will be looking at is November 2017. The cover is one that will aid its ability to be picked off the shelves. It has a cover picture with a rock formation in the water along with some people on a raft. The color combination on the front cover makes it pleasing to the eye along with a gold/bold title and black sub titles running along the left hand side. The subtitles on the cover hint at information included on the inside of the magazine including the phrase, "The New Bucket List," in bold black lettering.

The articles within the magazine are all related to travel and how to vacation in the best possible way. There is a longer article in the beginning of the magazine that is titled, "The New Bucket List," that ranges from pages 17-44. When you read this work, it is filled with information about many different travel destinations. This also has ads between it relating to places to travel, activities, and items to use while traveling. The following article begins on page 57 and goes to page 64. Instead of providing information about many locations you can vacation to, this one is specifically about the food in Tuscany. As you continue reading, many more articles appear that range from locations to go to, hotels to stay at, and even how to travel with less stress and more enjoyment.

Regarding advertisements presented within this magazine, there are many that the reader is exposed to. While flipping through this magazine, you will realize that most of the ads are on every other page or so. Some are before or after articles while others are in the middle. On one page you will be reading an article about magnificent vacation ideas and on the other you are informed about a specific hotel that may make your vacation even better, or so it says. When you look specifically about the information provided in the advertisements, you will notice that they could be covering drinks, hotels, locations to visit, plane companies, cars, and specific activities/tours to partake in. With where these advertisements are placed, many people may actually notice and pay attention to them, which will allow these companies to make an investment through the placement of their ads.

Photography that is used within this magazine is very helpful for readers to understand more about the information that they will be reading, not to mention it most certainly helps readers get drawn in and want to continue reading. Many of the photos are of a tropical area, however, there is still a decent variety. Moving from one page to the next, you will notice a beautiful teal body of water then change atmospheres and you will feel like you are in a forest or a hike through the mountains. The table of contents has one picture that takes up the whole page. This photograph is simply a breakfast scene with a croissant and a coffee. You can even see the flaky quality of the croissant and if you look at it for too long, you may even start to get hungry. Along with the picture is a caption that reads, "Breakfast at the Bartlett House in Ghent, New York, page 98." The articles themselves contain images that relate to the information involved within them. For example, one article talks about Tuscany and the photos used within are related to the town in Tuscany all the way to food that can be enjoyed there as well.

Travel and Leisure have not released the distribution number for this magazine specifically yet. Through research, I found out they release all the distribution numbers for their magazines every six months. Therefore, I have access to January-June 2017 issue's distribution numbers for this magazine but not the November 2017 issue specifically. The average distribution number for the January-June issues fell at 969,266. With this average it would be safe to say the November 2017 issue would have a number very close to this one as well. This magazine has not won any awards so far, but maybe it will in the future.
