Magazine Project Research (Travel + Leisure)

Travel and Leisure magazine is a beautiful travel magazine with many pages of information. The specific issue I will be looking at is November 2017. The cover is one that will aid its ability to be picked off the shelves. It has a cover picture with a rock formation in the water along with some people on a raft. The color combination on the front cover makes it pleasing to the eye along with a gold/bold title and black sub titles running along the left hand side. The subtitles on the cover hint at information included on the inside of the magazine including the phrase, "The New Bucket List," in bold black lettering.

The articles within the magazine are all related to travel and how to vacation in the best possible way. There is a longer article in the beginning of the magazine that is titled, "The New Bucket List," that ranges from pages 17-44. When you read this work, it is filled with information about many different travel destinations. This also has ads between it relating to places to travel, activities, and items to use while traveling. The following article begins on page 57 and goes to page 64. Instead of providing information about many locations you can vacation to, this one is specifically about the food in Tuscany. As you continue reading, many more articles appear that range from locations to go to, hotels to stay at, and even how to travel with less stress and more enjoyment.

Regarding advertisements presented within this magazine, there are many that the reader is exposed to. While flipping through this magazine, you will realize that most of the ads are on every other page or so. Some are before or after articles while others are in the middle. On one page you will be reading an article about magnificent vacation ideas and on the other you are informed about a specific hotel that may make your vacation even better, or so it says. When you look specifically about the information provided in the advertisements, you will notice that they could be covering drinks, hotels, locations to visit, plane companies, cars, and specific activities/tours to partake in. With where these advertisements are placed, many people may actually notice and pay attention to them, which will allow these companies to make an investment through the placement of their ads.

Photography that is used within this magazine is very helpful for readers to understand more about the information that they will be reading, not to mention it most certainly helps readers get drawn in and want to continue reading. Many of the photos are of a tropical area, however, there is still a decent variety. Moving from one page to the next, you will notice a beautiful teal body of water then change atmospheres and you will feel like you are in a forest or a hike through the mountains. The table of contents has one picture that takes up the whole page. This photograph is simply a breakfast scene with a croissant and a coffee. You can even see the flaky quality of the croissant and if you look at it for too long, you may even start to get hungry. Along with the picture is a caption that reads, "Breakfast at the Bartlett House in Ghent, New York, page 98." The articles themselves contain images that relate to the information involved within them. For example, one article talks about Tuscany and the photos used within are related to the town in Tuscany all the way to food that can be enjoyed there as well.

Travel and Leisure have not released the distribution number for this magazine specifically yet. Through research, I found out they release all the distribution numbers for their magazines every six months. Therefore, I have access to January-June 2017 issue's distribution numbers for this magazine but not the November 2017 issue specifically. The average distribution number for the January-June issues fell at 969,266. With this average it would be safe to say the November 2017 issue would have a number very close to this one as well. This magazine has not won any awards so far, but maybe it will in the future.
